In June when my husband and I we treated my parents to a trip to Hawaii which included our wedding. My Mom had always wanted to go and even before the wedding plans were even in place, we had decided that we needed a family vacation. We were happy to do it. It was the trip of a lifetime for all of us. It was our way of thanking them for all the things that they had done for us as a couple and for me when life was not so good. My 30's were financially struggling for me and my Dad came through more times than I can recall. So it was a big thank you. And I would do it again in heartbeat.
We did decide that we would each do a holiday card. Something unique from each of us. Since my husband is a wonderful photographer we decided that we would do a photo card. I also wrote a little poem to go with it. Once my creative juices got flowing it was fun and easy. I think they will like it.
Does this mean I will never get another present from my parents? No. I know my Mom will send me little things whenever she sees something she knows I will like. And I will do the same. The joy of gift giving should not be limited to one or two days a year. And the gift of love should always be given any day of the year.
We said no to the gift giving this year in a material way and embraced a new tradition. I cannot wait to see what we all come up with for cards. Sharing the love in a whole new way.
